Most Americans know almost nothing about russia and project all kinds of stupid and incorrect things onto it.
The left still has a hard-on about the Soviet Union and it guts them that it failed (in their imagination it was sabotaged by the eeevil capitalist west).
The right has a hard-on about ‘traditional Christian and family values’ which is so ridiculous when applied to russia that words fail.
So for the loony left Ukraine successfully resisting russia is too much like the collapse of the USSR.
It sounds dumb when you write it down but lots of people are devoted to ideas that look stupid when you write them down….
