Steps

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but working in IT has taught me that people are generally… really dumb?

What I’ve run into is that most people cannot read. And by that I mean that they are functionally illiterate. I’d say that’s true of about 90% of people. They can see words and sort of connect them but don’t really know what they mean in any larger, cohesive sense; there is no gestalt that ever forms.

And the second problem is that hardly anyone can follow step-by-step directions at all. Of the users I’ve supported over the years, maybe 5% of them could correctly complete anything with more than 3-4 steps to produce the expected end result.

So, combine functional illiteracy with the related inability to follow any sort of procedure reliably and it’s amazing anything gets done at all.

What Good

Remember, when someone wants to control you “for your own good” it will almost never be actually good for you — whether it’s the government, a software developer, a conservative, a feminist or any other person on group.

Any time you hear that or “security” or “for the children,” someone is nearly all of the time trying to con you, gain power over you, or lead you down a bad path. Just a useful general heuristic for life.

Corns

I am a unicorn, as they put it in corporate terms; I can do everything from level 1 help desk to very complex network design to compliance under multiple national and international frameworks to security to contract negotiation meetings with difficult customers. And far too many more to list here.

In my field, maybe 0.0001% of people at my level have a comparable skillset. This is not (just) to toot my own horn. It’s in the service of expressing something else and that is: no matter how glorious and resplendent a unicorn you happen to be, it most often works against as you as the more you can do, the more you are expected to do.

There was an earlier post where I said I had 14 different job titles. That’s actually now (and even was then) incorrect. It’s expanded to about 22-25 and still growing.

It’s become clear that I am going to have to do something about this as it’s not sustainable, but not sure what yet.

Your Choice

I don’t think anyone should be allowed to claim they were “groomed” if they are 20 or older. It’s mostly women who claim this, for whatever reason. Men could never get away with such obvious BS.

The only people who can be groomed are children and the mentally retarded. Which one do full-grown women wish to be classified as again? Choose wisely.

Mania

The problem with Covidians (other than a poor understanding of science and immunology) is that they believe the world should cater to their manias and paranoia. And the only ones that happens to reliably is billionaires like Jamie Dimon. So good luck with that.

Covidians would’ve basically ended all of civilization now in a failed attempt to forestall a fairly-mild virus. So, you know, glad we didn’t do that.

And what’s weird is that nearly all the Covidians out there politically align with Russia and believe Ukraine and Ukrainians should be genocided. I am still trying to understand that.

RFK Jr.

I think the idea is fucking absurd that a 31-year-old woman can be “groomed.” Liberals really do want to make women into children again. Perhaps we should just go ahead and declare that the age of majority for women is 40? 45? Would that make them happy?

Why many women seem to want to be infantilized I haven’t a single clue. Guess it removes accountability and responsibility?

Smurph Them

Not having files is one of the reasons I hate walled devices in general. All smartphones should die. Files are vastly superior. Much easier to find your data, especially if you have more than a few dozen of something to manage.

It’s funny watching Gen Zers get comically lost when they enter the corporate world and have more than 10 items to deal with, for which files and standard file systems are vastly more efficient. Their brains are not able to handle that complexity as they are accustomed to click and drool interfaces.

All Peeps

All the people who do nothing while working from home are the same ones who do not a goddamn thing in the office as well. It’s just that there, they are better at hiding their lassitude by gladhanding, ass-kissing and faking being busy.

A lot of managers just crave a false sense of control. In my experience, a crap worker is a crap worker anywhere. The noisy extroverts, though, hide it better.

Officiousness

I am so fucking glad no one can ever make me go into an office again. I have a combination of skills and certs that maybe 0.0001% of my peers have to my level, and that means I can demand a lot of things. So I will and I do.

And my expenses are only about $800 per month. Can’t nobody make me do shit. I spent my life doing smart enough things to get to this point. Many, many people said I could not get here, yet here I am.

Bully for me!

Resolve

It’s an odd idea that because some women get bothered sometimes in public by the worst 1% of serial-harassing men, that no one should talk to anyone in public ever.

We always seem to come up with the most dumbass and harmful solutions possible to problems that are in fact easily solvable.
