  1. I’d be frightened if I wasn’t already frightened of people deciding to go the wrong way on exit ramps.
How much did your car insurance premiums go down when you moved?
When I moved from another state to Florida, the insurance company TRIPLED my premiums because of “Florida drivers.” Other cities name their sports arenas after banks and hospitals, my city names them after accident referral services.

    • Yeah, my insurance was cut more than in half just by moving to another state. Not surprised to hear yours tripled on moving there.

Other states have bad drivers, certainly, but the data shows that Florida cities are the worst. As anyone who has lived there and then anywhere else surely knows.

I’ve driven in the Third World, and in Florida of course. There is certainly a different attitude to risk in the Third World but the drivers there tend not to be oblivious, just dangerous.

The worst and most plentiful type of Florida driver is both dangerous, very aggressive and completely oblivious to things like other cars, tractor-trailers, bridges, aircraft, tornadoes, star destroyers, etc.

I’ve seen some amazing things driving in FL.

  2. I think what happens is that there are so many different kinds of awful drivers and they’re all on the road at once. The state of the cars is often terrible too. It’s like a perfect storm of terrible road culture.

  3. The invention of a center turning lane running all the way through streets doesn’t help either.

Add in the drunk, elderly, angry, oblivious, texting, and tourists in beaters. I think people feel invincible on wide open roads and nearly endless sunshine. When it rains, everyone panics stupidly.

Florida doesn’t require emissions tests or state inspections so people hold on to their beaters and don’t bother maintaining them until something falls out of their car in the middle of a five lane highway. They will soak you for registration and title fees depending on the year and make of your car.
