Dove right in

Thereโ€™s someone doing good research on this now which is not yet completed, but I bet if you scratch the surface the HAES and Fat Acceptance movement receives large amounts of funding from the US processed food industry. And:

I will be absolutely shocked if the FA/HAES movement is not mostly funded by food interests. I think there is about a 100% chance of that being the case. Otherwise it makes no sense as a cultural phenomenon.

(Yes, GSElevator seems like a real tool. Which is why I didnโ€™t link directly to his Twitter feed. But being an asshole doesnโ€™t make someone wrong.)

  1. I don’t think it’s any more complicated than giant conglomerates will try to play both sides of any equation. Unilever bought Ben and Jerry’s and SlimFast on the same day, but sold SlimFast in 2014 because it wasn’t making enough money

And Unilever also owns Fair and Lovely (a bleaching cream) and Suave self tanners.
Clearly if you’re a giant conglomerate one thing you say for one product line will contradict what you say for another.
Also what you say for one product in a brand will contradict what you say for another product in a brand in the same country.

    • Yeah, of course, they are not monoliths. And marketing is usually fairly separate. But I do think there is a larger agenda via some of the RIAA/MPAA-like food lobbying groups.

It’d be odd and highly unusual if there weren’t. Pretty good evidence out there of links between the leaders of the FA/HAES movement and large food industry lobbying bodies.
