I wonder how much of the rise of identity politics has to do with the desire of corporations to demographically sort and classify people for advertising and product segmentation purposes? Thatโd be a difficult question to formally study, but Iโd bet a large part of the identity politics movement can be explained under that rubric.
Or perhaps an even larger societal movement is to blame? Sure, neoliberalism and its emphasis on โchoiceโ above all else has something to do with it. But is there more?
