Bindery

Today, I heard from a friend in the UK who hadn’t been in touch for a while. She said she missed me and that I “understand things effortlessly that most people cannot even think about.”

If that’s not a great damn compliment, I don’t know what it is. It’s not as effortless as it looks, though. Behind that instant intuition is tens of millions of pages of books. It was good to hear from her. She has a damn fine mind herself and is much funnier than I will ever be. She wanted my take on the changed world and the future that lies ahead. I gave it and she said she’ll stay in touch more.

I hope so.

Resourceful

I’ve had to explain many times that in fact virtual machines do need hardware. Sometimes, it was to technical people who absolutely should’ve known better. Hell, I worked at a hosting company where we had people who believed that once we had the base hardware we could spin up and use unlimited VMs on said hardware.

It’s insane the kind of stuff you encounter in the wild. Where did people leave their brains?

What pre-internet experience do you miss the most?

I miss the lack of surveillance. Not that there was none, but it had a cost; if someone or some entity wanted to keep tabs on you it was an active effort. These days if you have a mobile phone or a car made since ~2015 nearly anyone can buy your data and find out a huge amount of info. The government of course can also track your every move effortlessly. And don’t even try to convince me that smartphones do not “listen” to our convos. Unless you’ve gone full clown, it’s obvious that they do.
