Actual conversation I had today at work (on Slack, paraphrased and condensed to remove company information and for clarity):

Them: (User) has an ongoing issue that needs to be resolved and hasn’t been fixed by your team.

Me: Ok, what’s the ticket number? I looked through the queue and didn’t see anything from that person.

Them: They haven’t put in a ticket for the issue.

Me: No worries, did they let anyone know to it was a problem so we could enter a ticket and work on it?

Them: No, they mentioned it to me [their manager] and said no one had fixed it yet.

Me: So there was no ticket and they didn’t let anyone know about the problem?

Them: No, but it still needs to be fixed as it’s been broken for a while and it’s causing them to miss meetings. Isn’t your team monitoring things?

Me: We have monitoring in place for all infrastructure, but we have no way of knowing about anything being non-functional if it’s never reported. We do not monitor every single bit of functionality of every application on every single computer out there. That’s just not possible.

Readers, the “broken” thing was that the user had turned notifications off for Outlook and forgot or didn’t know how to turn them back on. And then never reported it or even Googled the issue. Ain’t no monitoring in the got-damn universe would ever catch that.

I’ve been planning for Social Security not to exist when I retire and looks like DOGE might make that happen. Glad I started planning for that more than 20 years ago.

Poverty rate is gonna jump and elderly are gonna be dying in the streets. But we all knew it was coming. Well, the smart ones did. The rich absolutely despise Social Security and covet that money. It was only a matter of time before they stole it all.

What is the worst advice a woman has ever give you?

Any advice from women on how to date women (unless she herself is a lesbian) is terrible. It’ll fail you completely. It’s the worst advice in the universe. If you like being friendzoned1 instantly, use dating advice from straight women.

Women aren’t deliberately lying here, most of the time. It’s just that most people aren’t very introspective, are attempting to make themselves look better and want to believe the highest ideals of themselves (especially) and others (to some extent).

But ain’t a bit of it true nor helpful.

  1. There is nothing wrong with being friends with women. It’s great, in fact. But I am talking about dating here.

My mother stabbed me. I don’t know how to keep going on.

My mom tried to stab me and got so close to doing so that the knife tip cut my shirt but never actually made it through to the skin before I caught her arm. (It wasn’t quite as close as that sounds; the shirt was baggy and it flared out when I was retreating to avoid the stabbin’.)

Sister, I can assure you, absolutely fucking assure you, I’ve experienced more danger and violence than you have ever seen in your life. That’s also a good point in this thread that men are either seen as a threat or are invisible like a chair until they are useful.

That’s the experience of about 95% of men throughout their entire lives. I know that women often hate being noticed, but now that women notice me for the first time in my life commonly, it’s a nice change. Turns out you only have to work out for thousands of hours, eat right for years, dress flatteringly, be confident, have money and have loads of swagger for some women to pay you even a little bit of attention.

If you could make one “guy problem” instantly understood by women, what would it be?

I agree with top-voted comment. Hints don’t work. Hints are useless. Use your words. As a grown-ass adult, get some gumption and use your fucking words.

Men have been trained very very very well that one woman’s “obvious hints” are another woman’s “just being friendly.” And they are indistinguishable. So that’s why you only get harassed1 by losers and not approached by the guys you want to be near you.

Hints are not going to be noticed nor assumed to be worth a warm tin of cat spit from any man you’d want to be with. So woman up and make what you want to happen happen.

Most of you won’t care about this, but Microsoft Graph is aimed at developers.

And that makes it nearly useless for sysadmin types like me. As are many other tech companies, Microsoft took away anything that made administration easy and is transitioning everything into a shitty development role. So now you have to write a thousand lines of code for what used to be a single-line command (not exaggerating; it really is that bad).

There’s no motherfucking way I’m going to start writing C# code just so I can add a few users to Active Directory. Fuck Microsoft and any clown who had anything to do with Graph.

It’s another example of making everything easy for developers but far more difficult for anyone who actually needs to be productive rather than sitting in front of the little code box and typing your little codes.

I realized this too pretty early. If you’re willing to accept the consequences (and I am), you can do whatever you want. I don’t want to be in a meeting? I leave. Someone’s abusing me? Just walking out works fine. Just try to stop me. You’ll find out what “world of hurt” means.

Being an adult means you get to choose. So choose. Quit being an utter wimp.
