My current favorite theory about what's gone wrong since the 1970s is that we stopped innovating to maximize performance and started optimizing for energy (and resource) efficiency.

I agree. Need to make tons more energy. It’s what leads to general betterment.

Europe is shooting itself in the face with energy austerity. It’s going to be a non-player if it goes that route in ~50 years.
