Microsoft has a new plan for Windows 11, and it actually sounds great.

Windows supported moving the taskbar to different sides of the screens for years—at least as far back as Windows XP in 2001.

Moving the taskbar to any edge of the screen was supported in Windows 95, first day of release. I know because I did it.
