Mond

Someone who doesnโ€™t understand how language works.

Something that screws up โ€” that goes horribly wrong โ€” is never actually pear-shaped. We just call it that. Yes, that is a reductio ad absurdum of her original โ€œpoint,โ€ but language is always a dance of connotation and denotation, implication and complication, perceived and intended meaning (and the resonance between and among all of that).

Saying someoneโ€™s eyes are โ€œalmond-shapedโ€ is certainly lazy writing. Iโ€™d never use it, not even in a blog post. But it indicates something apart from its direct referents of shape or nut, and that something is well understood.

After all, only squares would miss that.
