Select V

It is amazing that even with videos like the below each side sees exactly what they want to see. Even without AI manipulation, video and photos are worthless. They are often worse than having nothing. The confirmation bias and selective vision is too strong for most to overcome.

ICEd

The woman’s wife who got killed is an idiot. The woman who got killed was also an idiot.

I still don’t think it’s a justified shooting. But it’s also not prosecutable. The ICE agent was pretty clearly not in fear for his life, but when you do stupid, unpredictable and completely-avoidable shit around not-that-bright men with guns, very bad things tend to happen.

I don’t think Renee Good intended to run over that agent1, but I don’t think she cared if she did or not. Bad decisions all around. And as with most things of this sort, no side will agree and nothing good will come of it.

Not Even Wrong

This is something that I’ve debated with a couple of friends about. My position is that most social phenomena are too multicausal, too contingent on unknown factors and too multivariate to model. On the other hand, they generally argue that having any analysis is “better than nothing.”

I do not agree. Often, a “scientific” analysis produces false certitude and absurd conclusions that are then taken as truth while in no way resembling reality — and in fact, that in many cases that are farcically absurd on their face. One good example is the “scientific” contention that there are no differences between generations. There are many more.

Knowing is better than not knowing of course. But false knowing is even worse than either of those.

Let There Be Lux

If you call me anything other than “His Glorious Majesty, Conqueror of the Known Realms, Future Overlord of All Realms, Ruler of the Spaces Between and Beyond, Chosen of the Unknown and Unknowable Numens of the Infinite Black, Dreamer of All Dreams, Finder of All Lost Things, Scourge of the Gutless and the Insipid, the First and Only of His Name: The Eternal Galactic Overlord Lux Null,” you are deadnaming me.

And I will not stand for it.
