This just is not true at all. Women did have their own grunge style. I was there. I remember.
As usual with fashion, women just had more options for โgrungeโ gear than men did. While many women in that era did in fact also wear ratty t-shirts, a flannel overshirt and Doc Martens (my very close woman friendโs garb most days!), women had other options than the male uniform for the grunge look. They were often in babydoll, mini or slip dresses with dark tights and boots (usually Docs), often paired with flannel, a leather jacket or an oversized cardigan.
Itโs a bit Hollywood-ized (as itโs from a Hollywood movie), but this Bridget Fonda outfit below wouldโve been pretty typical of the female grunge aesthetic back then, including the hat.
The idea that there was no common womenโs grunge look back then is fucking ludicrous and 100% wrong.
