I remember seeing the Maniacs in the early to mid 80s when they played at UF in the “Rathskeller” (cafeteria with live music on the weekends). Fun times though the rathskeller burned down years ago.
Natalie Merchant is another lyricist (along with Joni Mitchell) that I would take over Dylan for the Nobel. Some time in the 90s she got kind of schlocky but her best lyrics work as poetry on their own.
Yeah, am a pretty big fan though I never managed to see the Maniacs live. Agree that Merchant is a better lyricist than Dylan.
I’m pretty sure I remember my uncle on my mom’s side talking about the Rathskeller burning down. He was attending UF at the time. I was 11 that year.
